Our Botvanger

Detection of liver fluke eggs in sheep and other grazers.

The Botvanger® filters liver fluke eggs from a manure sample (cattle, horse, sheep, etc.) by simply rinsing with water and then allowing it to settle. It takes five to ten minutes to process one manure sample with the Botvanger, after which, following the addition of a drop of methylene blue, it can be examined under a microscope. The device always works; even if there is only one egg per gram of manure, it can still be easily detected. With the Botvanger, no other substances such as zinc sulfate are needed, meaning no environmental burden or special disposal of these polluting chemicals. By using only water, the eggs do not collapse, making detection and distinguishing them from rumen fluke eggs much easier.

Liver fluke eggs

Under a microscope

After rinsing and settling, you can easily see whether and how many liver fluke eggs are present in the manure sample. This allows you to determine whether treatment of the herd is necessary.

The advantages of the Botvanger

Fast

Processing a manure sample with the Botvanger takes 5 to 10 minutes. Microscopic analysis depends on experience and infection level and takes about 15 minutes.

Reliable

Even if there is only one worm egg per gram of manure, the Botvanger detects it accurately. This provides a reliable picture of the infection pressure in your herd.

Easy to use

The Botvanger is designed for practical, no-nonsense use, allowing shepherds and livestock farmers with little laboratory experience to work with it. With simple steps and some microscope experience, you can independently perform a complete test.

Affordable

Taking and analysing your own manure samples makes regular monitoring affordable and easily accessible.

How does it work

Detection in 5 steps

This is how you can easily and quickly detect liver fluke eggs in cattle, horses, sheep, and other ruminants.

1

Collect manure

Collect manure of 5-10 animals and collect it in a bag. Mix the sample.

2

Weighing and pureeing

Measure out 8 to 10 grams of manure. Add water and mix well.

3

Sieve and press

Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer and press firmly to extract all the liquid. The eggs will end up in the liquid.

4

Pour through the Botvanger

Pour the mixture through the Botvanger. Rinse with water and tap the Botvanger against the edge of the sink to improve drainage.

5

Settle and investigate

Place the bottom sieve back over a cup and let the mixture settle twice. Add a drop of methylene blue and examine it in a Petri dish under a microscope.
